[engadget] How would you change HTC's Sense?
Sat, 20 March 2010 4:19:00 GMT - Microsoft's not going to allow HTC to cover Windows Phone 7 Series with its Sense UI overlay (which is going to be an interesting thing to watch in and of itself), but there's no question that the homegrown user interface has made a-many Windows Mobile phones look and feel a whole lot better than stock. Sense is also gaining traction in the Android realm, a sector where it's far more likely to either make a huge impact or be overlooked entirely. So, the question we're posing here today is this: if you were granted an HTC badge for a day, how would you change Sense? Are you satisfied with the quickness? Does anything simply get in the way? Any quirks that you just can't figure out? Any tweaks that you'd love to see made? We aren't always serious when we say t [...]
[engadget] Spike Jonze's free web film features robot love, vodka, long wait times
Sat, 20 March 2010 2:54:00 GMT - We wanted to tell you what Spike Jonze's new web film I'm Here is all about, we really did, and not just because it reportedly has robots in it -- though that was certainly a major factor in the decision. But after we crossed the virtual street to the virtual box office, we were informed that there were no seats left in the virtual theater. Imagine that. So instead of providing our impressions here, we'll just give you the facts. I'm Here is sponsored by Absolut Vodka; I'm Here is a 30-minute love story about humanoids living in Los Angeles. I'm Here can be viewed alongside Facebook friends; I'm Here can only be seen by 5,000 viewers a day. I'm Here promises a "striking online cinema experience," and we were struck by just how lifelike waiting for tickets co [...]
[techcrunch] Check-In Fatigue. Or, Why Im Rooting For An All-Out Location War.
Sat, 20 March 2010 2:04:15 GMT - I didn't have the same problems at SXSW this year that some people did. Was it too crowded at some events? Sure. But there were plenty of alternative things to do. Did some of the keynotes bomb? Yes. But there were plenty of other things to listen to. Did AT&T fail? No. Actually, they did an awesome job keeping the network up. Instead, I had a problem of a different kind: check-in fatigue. Seeing as location was this year's Twitter at SXSW, and seeing as I write a lot about location, I wanted to try to use as many of the services as I could during the actual conference. I drastically underestimated how much work that would actually be.
[engadget] ASUS' Express Gate 2.0 instant-on OS demoed on video
Sat, 20 March 2010 1:37:00 GMT - ASUS' original ExpressGate instant-on OS may be getting a little long in the tooth, but it looks like it's finally due for a serious replacement. While it didn't cause much fanfare at the time, ASUS was apparently showing off version 2.0 of the SlashTop-based OS at CeBIT earlier this month, and Notebook Italia has just now provided a quick hands-on video that gives us some idea of what's in store. As you can see, the biggest change is the interface, which now looks more than a little like webOS' cards system, and represents a significant step up form the barebones original. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself. [Thanks, Sal] Continue reading ASUS' Express Gate 2.0 instant-on OS demoed on videoASUS' Express Gate 2.0 instant-on OS demoed on [...]
[readwriteweb] Rulers of the Cloud: Google Becomes the Cloud, Search is a Feature
Sat, 20 March 2010 1:30:00 GMT - The shortest way to describe this is that Google is no longer a verb. It's becoming a noun. Not just the few clicks to find information, but the information itself and the experience surrounding it. Today, we get to add Google's chapter to "Will One Company Dominate the Cloud" introspective series and take a glimpse of the silent revolution from "index" to "be" that is transforming the company and it's products to the default way to engage the Internet. As fate has it, Google done us a big favor in preparing for this piece. The company has launched an assault on the enterprise with its movement in the Google App Engine, having a stand-off with China, and negotiating with the EU. And that was just a bit of Google news from this week. Sponsor Whereas it's a bi [...]
[engadget] Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 and 15 shipping to small businesses, cupcake lovers
Sat, 20 March 2010 0:39:00 GMT - We knew it was only a matter of time before Lenovo finally started shipping the larger and more powerful relatives of the ThinkPad Edge 13. Available from retailers now and Lenovo's own webstore in early April, the 14- and 15-inch Edges have the same design as the Edge 13 -- including the same spill-resistant chiclet keyboard we adore -- but boast more muscle under the hood. While the $599 models pack Celeron processors, they can be configured to your heart's content with Core i3 or i5 CPUs, 5,400 / 7,200rpm drives, Blu-ray and mobile broadband options. And if having a red ThinkPad has always been a drunken fantasy of yours, the Edge 14 and 15 come in a glossy black or red, and a matte black option is there for the traditionalists. Wondering what the Edge 14 [...]
[readwriteweb] Microsoft Updates Bing iPhone App and Removes It from All International iTunes Stores
Sat, 20 March 2010 0:31:34 GMT - Microsoft just launched a new version of its Bing iPhone app. The iPhone app gives you comprehensive access to Bing's core services, including Bing maps and directions, as well as news and image search. Besides offering better stability and a few interface tweaks, the new version of the Bing app also integrates more tightly with the iPhone by giving you access to your contacts in the mapping feature and making it easier to copy and paste URLs and share interesting results through email. Sponsor Releasing Bing for iPhone Worldwide was an Accident... Just as it launched this new version of the app, however, Microsoft also pulled the Bing applications from all the non-U.S. versions of the App Store. [engadget] Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 series 'will not initially offer copy and paste,' case-specific actions integrated into OS
Fri, 19 March 2010 23:41:00 GMT - Here you go, folks, an official statement from Redmond itself on the perennial Windows Phone 7 Series / copy-and-paste discussion. First and foremost, from the onset, there will be no copy and paste in the traditional sense; Microsoft is hoping to bypass the issue by integrating into the OS contextual, single-tap instances for viewing an address on a map (let's hope it has some good recognition algorithms here), doing Bing searches based on highlighted terms, dial a phone number, and so on. But the book isn't entirely closed here, apparently, as the statement goes on to say the company "will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear." We've also got a statement regarding the hacked emulator, to which a representative told us, "we ha [...]

[engadget] Sprint's HTC Touch Pro2 gets official Windows Mobile 6.5 update
Fri, 19 March 2010 22:39:00 GMT - Sprint had promised a first-quarter update for its Touch Pro2 way back in January, and sure enough, it's delivered the Windows Mobile 6.5 boost right on time. It might not have as much punch now that we know everything there is to know about Windows Phone 7 Series, of course, but it's still a pretty big deal -- the Touch Pro2 remains one of the best Microsoft-powered phones you can buy in the States, and unlike AT&T's Tilt2, it launched with that grubby old WinMo 6.1. It's available now, complete with Sense "enhancements" and a variety of bug fixes -- so if you've got one of these bad boys in your pocket, it seems like a must-grab.Sprint's HTC Touch Pro2 gets official Windows Mobile 6.5 update originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 17:39:00 [...]
[techcrunch] Crocodoc Sets Its Sights On Adobe Acrobat With New Update
Fri, 19 March 2010 22:22:00 GMT - Last month we wrote about Crocodoc, a new Y Combinator-funded company that makes it very easy to upload a text document or PowerPoint deck and mark it up online to share with your colleagues. Unfortunately, it was also pretty bare boned you couldn't even save your edited document to your hard drive. Today, that's changing: Crocodoc has rolled out some key new features (including the ability to save) that make the service significantly more flexible, and also pits it more directly against Adobe's Acrobat Pro. Aside from the ability to save to PDF, the new version includes a freehand pen tool, a tool to convert any website to PDF (which you can then add notes to), and a new API. In a few days, the company will be releasing its application on Google's recently [...]

[engadget] Palm: this is your survival guide
Fri, 19 March 2010 22:04:00 GMT - Oh Palm. Just a little over a year ago your future seemed so bright, so renewed. You walked away from CES 2009 reborn, held aloft by a completely innovative new mobile operating system, a striking piece of hardware, and a feeling amongst the press and investors that you were back in the game and playing to win. Now, less than a year and a half later, you've nearly returned to the dark and desperate place you'd found yourself in at the end of 2008; a rapidly declining mindshare, the bottom falling out of your stock, and bad dips in phone sales. All of it is leaving you backed into a corner where the common perception now is that you've got to sell to survive at all. So what went wrong? How did such a promising launch lead to such a disappointing reality? And [...]
[engadget] Microsoft dishes out Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 details
Fri, 19 March 2010 21:27:00 GMT - Both still seem to be a quite a ways from a release, but Microsoft has now announced a few details for its forthcoming Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 updates. The latter of the two actually seems to be the more significant, as it adds a so-called RemoteFX feature that Microsoft describes as the "special sauce" in its Remote Desktop Services. The short of it is that RemoteFX uses virtualized graphics resources and is able to function independently of any graphics stack, which Microsoft says will allow "any screen content" (including Silverlight and Flash) to be delivered to everything from full-fledged PCs to low-cost, thin client devices. Windows 7 SP1, on the other hand, is described as having "only minor updates," the biggest of which is -- you g [...]

[engadget] Apple now accepting iPad app submissions, get your jumbo-sized beer drinking simulations in before launch day
Fri, 19 March 2010 20:50:00 GMT - Apple just announced to developers that it's now accepting iPad applications. From the sound of it, applications submitted now will have a shot at being reviewed and approved before the iPad launch next month, though since most all apps developed so far have only been tested in the emulator, this is more of a "feedback" round for devs looking to be ready for the launch without actually testing their apps on hardware themselves. Apple says that "[o]nly apps submitted for the initial review will be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store," so you probably shouldn't wait around -- unless you've got one of those iPad test units headed your way, or you're a hardware-testing purist that will wait for the iPad launch to start testing apps and miss on [...]

[techcrunch] Google Hands Out Its First 1337 Cash Prize For A Chrome Bug
Fri, 19 March 2010 20:45:17 GMT - Back in January, Google announced that it would follow Mozilla's lead and start offering cash bounties for bugs found in the code of Chromium (the open-source browser behind Chrome), or Chrome by the community. Google both matches Mozilla's $500 and ups the bounty all the way up to $1,337 (yes, 1337) for "particularly severe or particularly clever" bugs. This week, they rewarded the first of those. As noted on the Chrome Release blog, Google made four cash payments on Wednesday. There were two $500 prizes (both for memory errors), one $1,000 prize (for a cross-orgin bypass), and the first-ever $1,337 prize. The lucky receipient of that was a man named Sergey Glazunov, who located a bug that Google is calling, "High Integer overflows in WebKit JavaScript obje [...]

[engadget] Palm shares take 25 percent plunge after downer earnings announcement
Fri, 19 March 2010 19:59:00 GMT - Remember that wild January day a bit over a year ago, when Palm debuted webOS and shares went wild? Well, after months of setbacks in the sales arena, and a rough $22 million Q3 loss announced yesterday, Palm's stocks took over a 25 percent dive today, dipping below $5 for the first time since the Pre was announced. At the time of this writing things seem to be leveling off a bit, but it's the most damage the shares have seen since October of 2009. Morgan Joseph analyst Ilya Grozovsky has downgraded the stock to "sell" and set a target price at $0. Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek has set a similar target, saying that he sees a "complete lack of earnings visibility." So, candlelit vigil time? Imminent buyout? Riots in the streets? Hardly. As a user and fan of the service, I am happy to see the company rewarded for its success, and I am excited to see how they can improve their already great product. However, as a follower of the national and global startup culture, it is a little disappointing to see the company leave their home and head west to the Valley. Fri, 19 March 2010 19:38:00 GMT - Haven't updated your laptop's trackpad driver lately? Then you may well want to consider doing so, at least if your laptop is equipped with a Synaptics trackpad. As a user on the Hardware Zone forums discovered, the latest Synaptics driver seems to enable multitouch gestures on older laptops that didn't previously support them, including two-finger scrolling, and three-finger click. [readwriteweb] Twitter Search Is About Popularity
Fri, 19 March 2010 19:26:00 GMT - For many people, Twitter offers a larger, more diverse stream of constantly flowing data than they've ever had to deal with before in their life. Depending on how many people you follow and how much they tweet, the information can become unmanageable. To that end, we have user lists, third-party clients, Twitter tools and search. And today, it looks like Twitter has begun working on making this last option - search - more useful for its users by offering the ability to percolate popular search results to the top of the page. Sponsor Jennifer Van Grove at Mashable noticed an update in the Twitter API Google Group this morning that alerts us of a soon-to-come search feature - popular tweets. From the post on Google Groups: Until the popular tweet feature all [...]

[engadget] LHC breaks its own energy record, still less powerful than Lady Gaga
Fri, 19 March 2010 19:14:00 GMT - The Large Hadron Collider is no stranger to setting energy records: back at the end of November it broke the 0.98 TeV record by hitting the 1.18 TeV mark. Well, the problem beleaguered collider's just handily surpassed itself -- this time with a truly stunning 3.5 TeV -- with beams of protons on record as having circulated at 3.5 trillion electron volt. Now, we're not scientists or anything, but that sure is a lot of volts! CERN's moving on later this week and will begin colliding the beams so they can check out the tiniest particles within atoms in the hopes of finding out more about how matter's made up. We look forward to hearing all about that, too -- but until then, we made do by reading the source over and over.LHC breaks its own energy record, still l [...]
[engadget] Vodafone Spain replacing microSD cards on 3,000 virus-infected handsets
Fri, 19 March 2010 18:49:00 GMT - It looks like the virus-strewn HTC Magic that was recently purchased from Vodafone UK is only the tip of the iceberg. According to Vodafone Spain, some 3,000 users in all may have been exposed to Mariposa malware -- which used the handset's storage to make its way to customer's PCs via USB, leading the company to replace the microSD cards for infected customers. The company also says that that the incident is "isolated and local," but with the number of infections rising from one in the UK to 3,000 in Spain in just over a week we wouldn't be surprised this story was just heating up.Vodafone Spain replacing microSD cards on 3,000 virus-infected handsets originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 13:49:00 EST. This version does not include Google Wave as part of its service. But there is an expectation that eventually the integration will serve as a federated platform that may serve as the basis for new open-source collaboration efforts. Novell is releasing the service initially to analysts and participants at BrainShare, its user group meeting next week in Salt Lake City. [engadget] Virtusphere's virtual reality hamster ball put to the test
Fri, 19 March 2010 18:26:00 GMT - For eons we've wondered what it would be like to walk around in a bona fide Virtusphere, and at GDC last week we finally got our chance. The large plastic cage can turn and roll in any direction, and once replete with a wireless head-mounted display and fake gun, we were ready to take on some polygonal alien baddies. Getting into the cage is surprisingly easy, but unfortunately once we had a screen strapped to our head our well-honed sense of balance was right out the window, and we found ourselves staggering around a bit as we got used to the motion of the cage. The real military versions have a motion sensing gun controller, but we had to do all our aiming with our head, which didn't help. After a minute or so we got used to the "momentum" involved in movi [...]
[engadget] iBuyPower crams Core i7-980X Extreme Edition into Paladin desktop line
Fri, 19 March 2010 18:04:00 GMT - If you somehow held off on buying a Core i7 rig as soon as they popped out last year, you're in luck -- and your poor Pentium II system is flat out of it. Just about everyone has updated their gaming desktop lines this week with an option to splurge on Intel's 3.33GHz (or more) Core i7-980X Extreme Edition processor, and iBuyPower is no different. Said PC builder is now offering the chip within four of its Paladin desktops, and given that the stock clock speed is far too sluggish for your own greedy self, the Paladin XLC V3 ships in an overclocked configuration that promises a 30 percent boost in performance over the stock silicon. According to Hopkins' article, Facebook not only drives a high amount of traffic, higher than Google News, but its users are far more loyal, as well. Sponsor Hopkins took a look at the data earlier this month, noting that Facebook drives three times as much traffic to broadcast than Google News, and now we find that these users are also repeat offenders. That is, they don't just visit once, they come back for more. From the Hitwise blog: Hitwise data indicate that visitors from Facebook are more loyal to News and Media [...]

Spain-based social networking platform provider Genoom, which lets family members communicate amongst each other on private online community sites, is about to sign up its millionth user. This isn't exactly a huge milestone, but I think it is noteworthy since the startup is operating on a mere $80,000 in seed funding, which it raised from Midatel roughly 3 years ago.

They have an Augmented Reality iphone app [iTunes Store link] which pulls in data from the site.
[engadget] A few developers receiving iPads early, must keep it in room with blacked-out windows and tuck it in every night
Fri, 19 March 2010 17:42:00 GMT - Really, would you expect anything less from Apple? All sorts of wild tales have emerged about Apple's tight restrictions on developers lucky enough to receive early iPad test units, and no matter how true they might be, we're eating it up with a spoon. According to "people familiar" with the matter sourced by BusinessWeek, there's a 10 page pact for developers to sign, with requirements that include keeping the iPad isolated in a room with blacked-out windows, continuously tethered to a fixed object, photographic evidence of compliance, and of course no bragging to the Twittersphere about your score. Frankly, if the iPad isn't hand delivered to developer offices by a couple guys in well-tailored suits with an iPad briefcase handcuffed between them, we'd be s [...]
[VideoNuze] Wrapping Up the YouTube-Viacom Court Documents Coverage
Fri, 19 March 2010 17:40:11 GMT - Wow, based on the extensive coverage of the newly disclosed court documents in the Viacom-YouTube copyright lawsuit, you'd almost think the business press hit the pause button on everything else going on yesterday to spend time reading the details. The combination of 2 heavyweight companies slugging it out, billions of dollars at stake and juicy, behind-the-scenes details finally revealed (like how the $1.6 YouTube acquisition largesse was shared) makes this an irresistible story with lots of legs. I've only spent a little time reviewing the documents, but for those interested in the 360 degree immersion, following is some of the best coverage I've been reading, in no particular order. No doubt there's plenty more to come. And if you're a real glutton for pu [...]
[engadget] AiLive shows off its LiveMove 2 software for building MotionPlus and PlayStation Move gestures
Fri, 19 March 2010 17:19:00 GMT - If you've been following closely, there are really two sorts of input available to the PlayStation Move. The one that gets the most love and screen time is the camera-based, 3D meatspace tracking that the PlayStation Eye performs in conjunction with the fancy colored ball at the end of the PlayStation Move wand, but most of the actual gameplay we've seen is in truth much more similar to the Wii's MotionPlus than Sony might want to let on. The MotionPlus and PS Move have very similar configurations of gyroscopes and accelerometers, and actually use the same software from AiLive (co-creators of MotionPlus) for developing the gesture recognition that goes into games. We actually got to see the LiveMove 2 development environment in action, and it's pretty impres [...]
[slashdot] $99 Moby Tablet As Textbook Alternative

It could eliminate the need for students to buy and carry bound textbooks and an array of other tools. The tablet is expected to hold a full year's worth of books but weigh less than half of one typical textbook." The tablet is a bit vaporous at this point, but if the final device comes anywhere near these specs and price point, it could be attractive. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Fri, 19 March 2010 17:17:25 GMT - As one of ReadWriteWeb's iPhone users, I'm always looking for new applications to try out. Some get downloaded for a day and then deleted right away, others slowly inch their way closer to my homescreen. Even rarer are the ones that become actively used on a regular basis. Occasionally, we like to share our findings regarding our favorite new apps. (See, for example, last month's list here). Although I can't guarantee that all of the ones on the list below will become favorites forever, they piqued my interest enough to get a coveted spot on my iPhone this month. Let us know what you think about their potential for long-lasting success. Sponsor 1. Miso I've been playing with Miso off and on for a week or so. [techcrunch] Apple iPad? The Germans Have Other Ideas
Fri, 19 March 2010 17:04:06 GMT - While every man and his dog is waiting for their preordered iPad to arrive, some Germans went their own way and yesterday presented a Slate that appears to have, well, better features. The Neofonie WePad has similar form and function as the wet dreams of our Crunchgear editors, but facts are that the German Android device has a bigger multitouch screen and a faster CPU than the iPad. Also it runs Flash, has USB ports, an inbuilt card reader and expandable memory. Additionally it allows complete multitasking and has a webcam. Beat that baby.
[engadget] Niko, the N900-powered Lego robot, looks poised to take over Twitter (video)
Fri, 19 March 2010 17:01:00 GMT - While we've seen no shortage of smartphone-powered robots in the past, the Nokia camp has been sadly under-represented. But, there's a new one coming to balance things out, a machine called Niko that has Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 components for a body and an N900 for a brain. The bot has been under construction for a few weeks but it has just made its YouTube debut with the short video posted after the break, showing it roving around and taking a photo whenever it bumps into something. When all systems are go and the machine is set free Niko will be posting messages and pictures to Twitter describing its every move in thrilling detail. We can't wait for it to start picking fights with @CourtneyLoveUK.Continue reading Niko, the N900-powered Lego robot, looks poi [...]

[VideoNuze] Google's 1 Gigabit Fiber Experiment is a PR Bonanza
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:51:28 GMT - I was deeply skeptical of Google's recently announced 1 gigabit/second fiber-to-the home experiment, but I will concede this: it appears to be influencing the broadband Internet access discussion and is turning into a PR bonanza for the company. Consider 2 of the latest examples: Comcast, America's largest broadband ISP, announced this week that it would make 100 megabit/second speeds available to all customers within 12-18 months and the FCC's new broadband plan set a goal of 100 million U.S. homes having 100 mbps within 10 years and that all schools, hospitals and government building should have 1 gbps access - goals that seem influenced by Google's experiment. Meanwhile, as my former colleague and astute industry watcher Bruce Leichtman pointed out to me [...]

[readwriteweb] Three iPhone Apps To Save Yourself & The World
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:33:00 GMT - We saw a cartoon recently that shows the attendees of a "Climate Summit", with a single naysayer yelling out from the back of the crowd "What if it's a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?" Well, in the spirit of creating a better world for nothing, we bring to you three iPhone apps that we hope can help do just that. Sponsor In her panel on "Handheld Awesome Detectors: World Changing Mobile Apps" last week at the South By South West festival in Austin, Rachel Weidinger got to talking about a number of iPhone apps that could help us all do just that - change the world. While some, like Ushahidi are certainly world changing, they're not much use for day to day life, so we decided to let you know about three apps she clued us in on that can hel [...]
[gizmodo] Windows Phone Office Screenshots [Windows Phone]
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:31:21 GMT - Microsoft has decided to not show screenshots of the mobile Office suite for Windows Phone 7—possibly because they're not final, possibly because they just don't want to focus on Office as part of their new "consumer" oriented strategy. Either way, here's what mobile Office looks like. It's really streamlined and simple. [Techau via Engadget] More » [...]
[engadget] New UK Internet Addiction clinic offers in-patient therapy to 'screenagers'
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:19:00 GMT - Internet addiction, as you know, is a growing worldwide concern. Recently, the UK opened its first rehab clinic for Internet Addiction (the provocatively named Broadway Lounge), but that was only the beginning. Capio Nightingale Hospital in London has announced its own plan to get gets out of the World of Warcraft and into the real world through an intensive in-patient, day care, or group therapy environment. The program is aimed at 15 to 17-year-olds, although kids as young as 12 could participate. A hospital spokesman said that the service hopes to "address the underlying causes of this addiction to transform screenagers back into teenagers." And if you thought we were running this because we wanted to use the word "screenagers," you might be on to somethi [...]
[VideoNuze] Kaltura Gives HTML5 Another Boost
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:13:59 GMT - HTML5, the next version of HTML, which seeks to make video more open and flexible, got another boost this week as Kaltura, the online video platform company, and its partners unveiled two new initiatives. Kaltura made available its HTML5 Video and Media JavaScript Library and also launched HTML5Video.org, a site that includes demos and related news.Ron Yekutiel, Kaltura's Chairman and CEO explained to me that given the company's emphasis on open source, it was a natural to embrace HTML5. Ron sees HTML5 as allowing developers to treat video just like text and freeing video to run across platforms, devices and browsers without needing any plug-ins. One of HTML5's biggest benefits is that it works on the iPhone, which means developers using it avoid Apple's ant [...]
[VideoNuze] Potential Blockbuster Bankruptcy Another Reminder of Changed Movie Landscape
Fri, 19 March 2010 16:07:57 GMT - In case you missed it, this week Blockbuster, the once dominant movie rental chain, filed its 10K annual report with the SEC, in which it warned of "substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," continuing on to say it may seek relief through a bankruptcy filing. A filing has been rumored for a while now, but until its annual report, Blockbuster has resisted acknowledging this path.Aside from whatever else can be said about Blockbuster in recent years - vast over-expansion, poor financial management, slowness to respond to new competitors like Netflix and Redbox - the company's potential bankruptcy is surely one of the most vivid reminders of how much the movie rental industry has changed in the last 10 years and how much it is yet to [...]
[engadget] Cablevision bumps Comcast to the back, 3D sports at home starts next week
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:56:00 GMT - Just as Comcast leapfrogged DirecTV's 3D plans, its claim to the first live HD 3D event has been stolen away by Cablevision, which will broadcast a Rangers/Islanders NHL matchup Wednesday, shown both in a special viewing party in the Theater at Madison Square Garden and on iO TV channel 1300 (if you already have a 3DTV but not Cablevision then keep an eye on your channel guide as, like the Masters broadcast, it may be shared with other networks.) While this is probably just the beginning of another FCC battle over who it will have to share the broadcasts with, MSG is just focusing on keeping a trend going since it was one of the first to jump on HDTV production of NBA and NHL games way back in 1998 and plans to keep 3D broadcasts coming over the next year wi [...]
[techcrunch] OneRiot Rolls Out Realtime Ad Unit That Refreshes To Match Trending Topics
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:55:53 GMT - Last year, OneRiot ventured into the advertising world with RiotWise, an ad format which places content in an emphasized position in their realtime feed. The search engine also launched a pilot program of RiotWise Trending Ads, a stream of ads that correspond to trending topics as they emerge across the social web, that has since been integrated into the search engine's API. Today, the realtime search startup is improving upon its advertising product by offering Trending Ad unit that automatically updates in realtime corresponding to the the most popular trending topics at the time. The ability to update in realtime allows OneRiot to show advertiser content that is relevant to trending topics as they emerge on networks like Twitter, Facebook and the web. The [...]
[techcrunch] Skype Legend Morten Lund Will Rock GeeknRolla, April 20, London
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:50:57 GMT - We've just confirmed that Morten Lund, possibly the quintessential European tech entrepreneur/investor - will be keynoting at this year's GeeknRolla in London on April 20. An entrepreneur from Copenhagen, Denmark, Lund is a talismanic figure on the European scene. While many tech players in Europe are accused of being too timid, this is a guy who - like many Silicon Valley players - bets a lot of chips at once. Indeed, his story reads like a roller-coaster ride in European entrepreneurship. Wikipedia describes Lund as a startup 'ideologist' and 'visionary' who has founded or co-invested in more than 40 high-tech start ups in the last decade, most famously Skype. In May 2008 he exited Danish social networking and mobile backup site ZYB to operator Vodafone Eu [...]
[engadget] Keepin' it real fake: Teclast's dual-screened K9 e-reader looks like Alex and Kindle made a baby
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:34:00 GMT - We almost hate to throw the KIRF moniker on a product we wouldn't mind owning, but this e-reader that popped up at the EREXPO in Shenzhen certainly bears more than a passing resemblance to the Spring Design Alex e-reader -- and the button layout on the right is a dead ringer for the Kindle. It's called the K9, the latest reader from Teclast, and it follows a growing trend of Android-powered devices with a color LCD on the bottom and an E-Ink screen on top. The screens measure 3.6- and 6-inches respectively and, while we don't know anything else about it at this point, we wouldn't be surprised it inherits its father's tardiness.Keepin' it real fake: Teclast's dual-screened K9 e-reader looks like Alex and Kindle made a baby originally appeared on Engadget on F [...]

[onlinevideowatch] In Viacom Suit YouTube Has Already Won
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:18:58 GMT - Let's face it. Google's acquisition of YouTube meant that any attempt to shut the service down would fail. [engadget] Intel's X25-V and Kingston's SSDNow V Series face off in battle for best value SSD
Fri, 19 March 2010 15:13:00 GMT - Got $125 and a burning desire to get in on the SSD fun? Intel and Kingston both have models priced to seduce that cash away from your pocket, and here comes AnandTech with a comparative review to help you make an informed decision. To start off with, Intel's X25-V sports 40GB of storage and is described as a smaller version of the X25-M G2, whereas Kingston's V Series boot drive offers a smaller 30GB capacity but also comes with a fuller upgrade kit. Since this is 2010 and not some prehistoric age, both drives naturally come equipped with Trim support. In benchmark results, Intel's drive took the advantage in the performance of random read/write tasks, but was second best when it came to sequential write jobs. Ultimately, that extra 10GB of storage and the f [...]
[engadget] Windows Phone 7 Series T-shirt cannon gets detailed, redefines 'mobile warfare'
Fri, 19 March 2010 14:51:00 GMT - Microsoft's MIX 10 Windows Phone app demos were highlighted by a robotic t-shirt cannon entirely controlled by a WP7S app, and the code monkeys behind the project are now back with a full breakdown of how things were achieved -- the bot was built on a standard battle-bot chassis, which was then modded with the cannons and an HP Envy laptop for control purposes. Just to drill in the point about how familiar development for the new mobile OS will be, the MS guys point out that outsider assistance on the project was recruited under the pretext that what was being built were "out of the browser" Silverlight apps for the desktop. Very crafty. We've got video of the cannon in action waiting after the break, along with an image of the Phone controls.Continue readin [...]
[VideoNuze] VideoNuze Report Podcast #53 - March 19, 2010
Fri, 19 March 2010 14:48:08 GMT - Daisy Whitney and I are pleased to present the 53rd edition of the VideoNuze Report podcast, for March 19, 2010. This week Daisy and I dig into my post from this past Wednesday, "The Battle Over Movie Rentals is Intensifying" in which I described a new $30 million ad campaign that launched this week to promote consumer awareness of movies accessible through cable TV operators' Video-on-Demand (VOD) initiatives. The campaign is being funded by 8 Hollywood studios and 8 cable operators and will run for the next 12 weeks. In the post I noted how the so-called "day-and-date" availability of movies on VOD (simultaneous with their DVD release), plus the consumer convenience of immediate viewing on the TV, are key VOD differentiators. In today's podcast Daisy and [...]
[techcrunch] Interview: Microsofts Scott Guthrie on Silverlight and Windows Phone
Fri, 19 March 2010 14:40:06 GMT - This year's MIX 2010 was led by Scott Guthrie, who has emerged from Microsoft's rank and file to own just about everything developer-related. Where last year's MIX and PDC conferences were spearheaded by Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, Guthrie's keynote appearances focused on the progress Silverlight has made in driving the company's 3 Screens and the Cloud approach to the disruptions going on in mobile, television, and the Web OS desktop. I spoke with Scott after his opening day keynote in Las Vegas: [...]
[engadget] Charlie Miller to reveal 20 zero day security holes in Mac OS X
Fri, 19 March 2010 14:29:00 GMT - Say, Charles -- it's been awhile! But we're pleased as punch to see that you're back to your old ways, poking around within OS X's mainframe just looking for ways to remotely control the system, snag credit card data and download a few interoffice love letters that are carefully stashed 15 folders down within 'Documents.' The famed Apple security expert is planning yet another slam on OS X at CanSecWest, where he'll reveal no fewer than 20 zero day security holes within OS X. According to Miller, "OS X has a large attack surface consisting of open source components, closed source third-party components and closed source Apple components; bugs in any of these types of components can lead to remote compromise." He also goes on to reemphasize something he's bee [...]
[engadget] Word, Excel and OneNote for Windows Phone 7 Series revealed
Fri, 19 March 2010 14:07:00 GMT - We actually haven't seen any official shots of the Office apps for Windows Phone 7 Series, but now that Microsoft's emulator has been hacked and unlocked, we've got a glimpse of what creating a Word doc in OneNote looks like -- and while there's a high probability that this a super-early version of the app, it's still revealing in how drastically minimal it is. Microsoft says most people just want to make minor edits and leave comments to Office docs while on the go, not make large edits with copy and paste, so we'd expect to see track changes in the final version, but something tells us the main interface isn't going to look tremendously different than this. One more shot and the video with Word after the break -- hit the source for the second vid with Exce [...]

[engadget] 3D invisibility cloak fashioned out of metamaterials
Fri, 19 March 2010 13:51:00 GMT - Those HDTV manufacturers did tell us that 3D was going to be everywhere this year, didn't they? Keeping up with the times, scientists investigating potential methods for rendering physical objects invisible to the human eye have now moved to the full three-dimensional realm. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has developed a photonic metamaterial that can make things disappear when viewed from all angles, advancing from previous light refraction methods that only worked in 2D. It sounds similar to what Berkeley researchers developed not too long ago, and just like Berkeley's findings, this is a method that's still at a very early stage of development and can only cover one micrometer-tall bumps. Theoretically unlimited, the so-called carpet cloak could ev [...]
[engadget] 150,000 take part in FCC's broadband census, do their part for the greater good
Fri, 19 March 2010 13:29:00 GMT - The FCC wants you to help it kill bogus ISPs, and its primary weapon is its Consumer Broadband Test, released to the world last week. 150,000 people have already done their part, giving a glimpse at some early statistics describing just what the state of American downloadin' looks like. Average download from the Ookla test is a respectable 11.5Mbps and upload is 2.09Mbps, but if you look at the spread of those results a full half of test takers have a rather more pedestrian 4Mbps maximum download. An early map is included below showing results by state but, as Ars Technica points out, many of the "surprise" dark green entries (like Georgia) have only had a few-thousand respondents thus-far, and you can figure most are in-the-know enthusiasts paying extra to [...]
[engadget] BlackBerry OS 6.0 leaked?
Fri, 19 March 2010 13:10:00 GMT - Are these grabs from RIM's refreshed BlackBerry OS 6.0 or just fanart from some sleepy design school student meant to trick the tech press? We don't know, but BBLeaks claims that they come "highly regarded as real from one of our best connects." But before getting too worked up, it's worth noting the bizarre similarities between these grabs (San Francisco, the weather widget colors, Haiti tweet, and font) and the slide pulled from that "Super Apps" developer webinar back in February -- images that RIM called nothing more than mockups of nothing important at the time. Still with a consumer-focused, BlackBerry slider rumored to be making its first appearance next month at RIM's own WES show, well, who knows. Really, does anybody know? Webinar image after the b [...]
[engadget] T-Mobile and Clearwire mulling 4G partnership
Fri, 19 March 2010 12:53:00 GMT - Looks like the kids at T-Mobile USA are well aware that their company's future will depend on offering both compelling handsets and a competitive network for them to ride on. Reuters reports that the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary has been exploring all its options with regard to the provision of 4G services, including potential joint ventures with cable companies and even spectrum sharing with AT&T, though the likeliest candidate for the moment remains Clearwire's WiMAX infrastructure. Asked about a potential merger with Sprint, who controls more than 50 percent of Clearwire, T-Mobile's CEO Robert Dotson declined the idea, explaining that "what you never want to do is take one company that is going through challenges and take another company going through [...]
[engadget] Apple said to be preparing 12-core Mac Pros and 27-inch LED Cinema Displays
Fri, 19 March 2010 12:32:00 GMT - AppleInsider has rounded up its stable of "people familiar with the matter" and squeezed them for info on Cupertino's plans for the near term. Firstly, they've heard that a 27-inch version of the currently available 24-inch LED Cinema Display is on its way, sporting a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and targeted for release "by June." The more exciting tip from those in the know, however, relates to the well aged Mac Pro and its future upgrade path. Apple has apparently firmed up plans to offer 6- and 12-core options (to replace the current 4- and 8-core variants), though the star of the show internally is said to be Intel's Xeon 5600, rather than the similarly specced Core i7-980X that had been rumored. This seems to be motivated by the fact the i7 beast can't do [...]
[techcrunch] CloudCrowd Takes On CrowdFlower To Outsource Labor To The Cloud
Fri, 19 March 2010 12:30:56 GMT - TechCrunch50 startup CrowdFlower has been attracting a lot of attention, even raising $5 million in funding recently. CrowdFlower is a labor as a service startup that helps businesses outsource mundane or repetitive tasks to the cloud. Now the startup has attracted a competitor, recently launched CloudCrowd, which also promises increase efficiency and lower costs to companies by breaking large projects into smaller tasks, and distributing them to its virtual workforce. Once a client assigns a task to CloudCrowd, the company will distribute tasks its work force of more than 100,000 workers. With each task completed, a worker earn a credibility rating that determines the types of tasks they are offered. Workers who don't have a rating yet are assigned basic ta [...]
[engadget] Windows Phone 7 Series emulator unlocked, shows a few surprises
Fri, 19 March 2010 11:58:00 GMT - Microsoft was kind enough to release the software development kit for Windows Phone 7 Series on Monday, and although there was some fun to be had by scrolling around and exploring, much of the cool stuff the company showed off at MIX last week is not included -- or is it? As it turns out it's in there; only a little help is needed to unlock 'em and then all those magical hubs start them spinning for your enjoyment, including a few things not seen before. Most notable? A comprehensive looking file explorer and even a task manager, something a bit curious given the OS's effective lack of multi-tasking. The unlock was discovered and initially distributed by engineer Dan Ardelean, but he has since recanted and pulled the required file. Naturally, though, it has [...]
[yahoo] Microsoft, Adobe confident there is room for Silverlight, Flash (InfoWorld)
Fri, 19 March 2010 11:40:30 GMT - InfoWorld - The HTML5 specification could be a game-changer in the rich Internet application realm, but representatives of Microsoft and Adobe Systems, both of which have proprietary plug-ins for Web applications, remained confident Thursday in their companies' Web strategies.
[techcrunch] Siri Hires Mobile Expert Gummi Hafsteinsson Away From Google
Fri, 19 March 2010 11:27:51 GMT - We haven't heard all that much from Siri, the venture-backed startup that is working on virtual assistant applications for smartphones. Still well below most people's radar, the company raised $24 million in venture capital and recently released its first app for the iPhone after nearly a year of development. But that doesn't mean the startup has a lack of ambition: they've just hired Gummi Hafsteinsson, who has led several of Google's most successful mobile product initiatives as Senior Product Manager, as their new VP of Product.
[engadget] HP Slate priced at 400 for June launch, Atom CPU confirmed?
Fri, 19 March 2010 11:27:00 GMT - Reputable Spanish publication Clipset has the first concrete report on pricing and internal specs for HP's Slate. Seemingly obtained from HP itself, the €400 ($546) price tag positions the Slate a notch above netbooks and bodes well for the expectation that it'll undercut the iPad's entry level pricing. Straight currency conversations are inadvisable in such situations, so we'll just have to wait until official stickers for the iPad in Europe are known or HP announces US prices for the Slate. Further info includes an Atom CPU, Flash support, USB connectivity, a memory card reader, and a back-mounted webcam (see it after the break). The launch of this Windows 7 device is slated for June, while retail availability in Europe is said to be expected at some [...]
[engadget] PowerColor jumps on the Eyefinity bandwagon, breaks off a wheel
Fri, 19 March 2010 10:34:00 GMT - Sure, the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition is the latest and greatest in desktop multi-monitor solutions, but if you happen to be hexaphobic (or financially challenged, perhaps) you'll need something a wee bit smaller. To that end, PowerColor just introduced the Radeon HD 5770 Eyefinity 5. With a whole one less mini-DisplayPort than its heftier cousin, the Eyefinity 5 has all the mid-range muscle of a regular Radeon 5770 -- down to the megahertz, we checked -- but has five independent display controllers for that wrap-around HD monitor matrix you've always dreamed of. Whether the 5770 can actually run games across five monitors is another question, but we expect that reviews of just that functionality will surface (along with pricing, availability, dongles [...]

[engadget] PVI's color E-Ink displays are a perfect match for Kindles
Fri, 19 March 2010 9:57:00 GMT - You know who makes the E-Ink displays on the Kindle? PVI. The Taiwanese company is also the EPD provider for several other tier-1 eReader device makers including Sony. So take a good look at that color E-Ink prototype display currently sitting in a PVI booth at a Shenzhen tradeshow 'cause that's what you'll see packed in color eReaders near the end of the year and into 2011. PVI is showing off both 6- and 9.7-inch color prototypes set to hit the manufacturing lines in Q4 (and sampling now), just right for the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX should Amazon choose to keep things simple and just swap out the display (and a minimum of componentry) within its existing device lineup. It's worth noting that the extra layer of color filtering glass will impact battery life a [...]

[engadget] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 and 470 specs and pricing emerge
Fri, 19 March 2010 9:31:00 GMT - We're only a week away from their grand unveiling, but already we've got word of the specs for NVIDIA's high end GTX 480 and GTX 470 cards. Priced at $499, the 480 will offer 480 shader processors, a 384-bit interface to 1.5GB of onboard GDDR5 RAM, and clock speeds of 700MHz, 1,401MHz, and 1,848MHz for the core, shaders and memory, respectively. The 470 makes do with 446 SPs, slower clocks, and a 320-bit memory interface, but it's also priced at a more sensible $349. The TDPs of these cards are pretty spectacular too, with 225W for the junior model and 295W for the full-fat card. Sourced by VR Zone, these numbers are still unofficial, but they do look to mesh well with what we already know of the hardware, including a purported 5-10 percent benchmarking adva [...]
[techcrunch] Google May Slay Your First Born Child, According To This Video
Fri, 19 March 2010 8:45:25 GMT - Look, I'm all for privacy, liberty, rights, etc. But this video (embedded below) is pretty ridiculous. Listening to this, you'd think Google was born of a desire to trick everyone on the planet. Does Google make almost all of its money off of ad revenues? Yes. But does that mean they're out to screw you by any means necessary? No. The video even delves into Google Buzz and its privacy debacle. But it implies that the issue stems from Google's desire to control you. Really, it's just that Google can't seem to comprehend social, and was rushed into rolling out Buzz, and handled it very poorly.
[engadget] Casio's solar-powered Pathfinder watch plays the green card twice
Fri, 19 March 2010 8:44:00 GMT - Plotting their latest spread of watches this spring, Casio executives decided it was time to "go green." Some poor schmuck in R&D took them at their word. Thankfully for mother nature, the Casio Pathfinder PRG110C-3 is more than meets the eye; the watch -- suited for argonauts needing an altimeter, barometer, thermometer and digital compass -- also has a miniature solar cell built into its face to automatically recharge the battery. Though Casio's claim that this last will cut down on the three billion batteries Americans trash each year seems a little reaching -- watch batteries last a lot longer than a AA -- the timepiece does help the planet some merely by being packaged in recyclables. Fri, 19 March 2010 7:49:14 GMT - We're seeing a few glimpses from Mix10 of what Windows Phone 7 Series will look like for the enterprise. Perhaps most compelling is the continued emphasis on creating an experience more so than an enterprise "phone." It appears that Microsoft has learned a lesson that is more apparent every day. People want smartphones as much for personal use as for business use. Sponsor But Microsoft is saying little about what it does plan for the enterprise with its Windows Phone 7 Series. They say more is to come in the next few weeks but clearly the emphasis is on the consumer market, not the enterprise. Network World did a little sniffing around Mix10 and did get a few tidbits of what we should expect: Windows Phone 7 is no longer enterprise-centric but the user exp [...]

[readwriteweb] 5 Old-School Businesses That Rely On User-Generated Content
Fri, 19 March 2010 6:00:00 GMT - You think the idea of user-generated content as a business model was invented in the Aughts? No way. Media outlets have been drawing on material created by amateurs, consumers and customers for generations and repackaging it for your entertainment. Folksy as it may sound, our history is driven not strictly by the polished content produced by a class of citizens with a slew of degrees and many years of training - a surprisingly amount has been generated in a largely unfiltered form by the masses. Sponsor Lon S. Cohen is a freelance writer and social media consultant. He is @obilon on Twitter. Necessity meant that user-generated content was packaged and presented through very structured channels. That's not that different from today, where the stuff that we pr [...]
[BizOnVid] Bandwidth Isn't Free, Distribution Isn't Free, So Why Should Content Be Free?
Fri, 19 March 2010 5:02:41 GMT - As the cost of delivering video continues to get cheaper every year and video syndication to devices and platforms continues to grow, it seems more and more people are under the impression that access to premium video content should be free. Frankly, I don't see where this idea of "free" comes from. Video content costs money to produce, to distribute...

[betanews] Palm posts third quarter results: disappointing sales, more net loss
Thu, 18 March 2010 22:37:34 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews In late February, Palm issued a shareholder warning which said that profits for the full year were going to be "well below" expectations due to a surprisingly slow demand for Palm's smartphones.Thursday evening, the company issued its third quarter earnings report, and though the numbers were actually up against the same quarter last year (when Palm posted a net loss of $98 million), the company is still losing money; $22 million, to be exact.True to the company's warning last month, device shipments were up tremendously, but sales did not follow. Thanks to the newly-released Pre Plus and Pixi Plus on Verizon Wireless, Palm shipped 960,000 devices, but only 408,000 sold through. Jon Rubinstein, Palm's chairman and CEO said, "Our re [...]

[NewTeeVee] Viacom: Google, YouTube Founders Willfully Ignored Infringement
Thu, 18 March 2010 21:00:44 GMT - The release of court filings in the three-year old copyright infringement suit between Viacom and YouTube has opened a whole new can of worms. To grow, Viacom says that YouTube's founders and later executives at Google turned a blind eye to copyrighted material.
[NewTeeVee] Did YouTube Jilt Viacom for Google?
Thu, 18 March 2010 20:40:42 GMT - Here's today's wacky theory: Maybe the reason Viacom has gone after YouTube so litigiously is because YouTube is "the one that got away" -- and anyone who's ever had an unrequited crush knows how much it hurts to see something special slip through one's fingers. In today's blog post by YouTube Chief Counsel Zahavah Levine, Levine [...]
[NewTeeVee] Want to Control Boxee Remotely? Theres a Palm OS App For That
Thu, 18 March 2010 20:00:25 GMT - The Palm Pre feels at times like the Jan Brady of the mobile world -- lacking the Marsha-ish confidence and good looks of the iPhone, or the Cindy-like next-big-thing appeal of the Droid. Thus, no one pays it much attention or takes it terribly seriously. But that just means fans of the device gotta [...]
[betanews] Netflix axes 'friends' feature due to unpopularity
Thu, 18 March 2010 19:42:50 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews For more than five years, Netflix has had a feature called "Friends" which lets users connect their Netflix account with others so they can view each other's queues, suggest movies to each other, or see how a movie ranks against their peers' ratings.Todd Yellin, Netflix VP of Product Management said that after six years, only two percent of subscribers actually used the feature, so it is going to be phased out in the coming months."No company has unlimited resources and we decided to move engineering development time and resources from a little used feature to support and maintain the things that benefit all Netflix members as the service evolves -- more devices for streaming and better encoding, for example," Yellin said.Streaming [...]
[NewTeeVee] YouTube Accuses Viacom of Uploading Clips, Making Its Life Difficult
Thu, 18 March 2010 18:45:33 GMT - Court filings in the three-year old copyright infringement suit between Viacom and YouTube have finally been made public, which should make some interesting reading and take over the rest of my afternoon. But in the meantime, YouTube Chief Counsel Zahavah Levine has written a pretty damning post on the YouTube blog, condemning Viacom for having [...]
[betanews] Kindle for Mac released: Is Amazon's e-reader moving away from hardware?
Thu, 18 March 2010 17:45:44 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews When Amazon debuted its first Kindle e-reader just over two years ago, we asked "...but will anyone buy it?"We still can't say for certain.Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has made it very clear that Kindle users consume a lot of Amazon's e-books. But to date, Bezos has never gone public with hardware sales figures. So we can't be sure if it's Kindle hardware that's driving content sales, or perhaps the software Kindle for Windows 7, iPhone, iPod Touch, and BlackBerry.A report from Credit Suisse Group AG in February determined that Amazon.com had a 90% share of the e-book sales market last year. So the question looms large: What is everyone reading these books on?Today, Amazon announced Kindle for Mac, the latest addition to the family of fre [...]

[VideoNuze] The Battle Over Movie Rentals is Intensifying
Wed, 17 March 2010 17:04:16 GMT - News this morning of a $30 million advertising campaign being launched by 8 Hollywood studios and 8 cable operators promoting "Movies on Demand" is fresh evidence that the battle over movie rentals is intensifying. According to the press release, the 12-week campaign, dubbed "The Video Store Just Moved In" is meant to raise consumer awareness of the convenience and affordability of renting movies on cable. Cable Video-on-Demand (VOD) has been around for a long while (in fact 20 years ago my summer internship for Continental Cablevision was studying the ROIs for VOD's precursor, "Pay-per-view"). What's new more recently is the growth of so-called "day-and-date" availability - which means movies are released to VOD at the same time as they become available on [...]
[betanews] Two months after the Nexus One, Motorola Droid to get Android 2.1
Wed, 17 March 2010 14:05:35 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews Motorola's Droid has been by far the most popular Android smartphone to hit the US market, selling at a faster pace than the first generation iPhone, and making up, by some accounts, at least 15% of all Android phones in use.It was the first handset to launch with Android 2.0, a significantly redesigned version of Google's mobile operating system, and it was the first Android device on Verizon, making it a popular choice for the wireless provider's huge subscriber base. Though it remains a very strong consumer device, the Droid's popularity in the tech community was quickly overshadowed by Google's Nexus One, which was launched only three months after it. The Nexus One became Google's first attempt at directly selling smartphones, [...]
[programmableweb] The Feelings Mutual: the Twitter-related API Ive Been Wanting
Wed, 17 March 2010 4:47:46 GMT - So and So is now following you on Twitter. Who? How did they find me? Why might I want to follow back? That's been a common bit of internal dialogue for me lately. Often the answer lies in our mutual friends or followers. Social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook make this easy. Not so with Twitter, which is why I was excited to find Intersect.

Remember, where there's smoke, there's a Comcast cable modem. Although one of the first browsers to be distributed for free, Internet Explorer has never been open source. Historically, it's always been ready when it's ready; its value proposition has been to the consumer who pref [...]
[betanews] In light of news that it has 'flopped,' Google's Nexus One lands on AT&T and Rogers
Tue, 16 March 2010 17:53:56 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews Google's first attempt at directly selling an Android-powered mobile phone is already being called a flop thanks to reports from mobile analytics company Flurry that estimate sales to have been around 135,000 units in the first 74 days on the market (compared to 1.05 million Motorola Droids, 1 million iPhones.)However, Google's approach to selling the device is vastly different from the more common methods employed by wireless carriers: it has been primarily sold unlocked for $529 directly from Google, or for $179 with a special T-Mobile plan. Since the device was released, there's been a "Coming soon: Spring 2010" section that shows Verizon Wireless and Vodafone as the next US and European carriers.Today, Google expanded the devic [...]
[betanews] FCC: Wireless spectrum 10x more valuable for wireless broadband than for TV
Tue, 16 March 2010 17:51:12 GMT - By Tim Conneally, Betanews The 300+ page National Broadband Plan that the Federal Communications Commission submitted to Congress today contains some logical goals, some ambitious ones, and some that are sure to cause a good deal of conflict between industries. One of the most contentious issues also happens to be the most important aspect of the broadband plan: the re-allocation of wireless spectrum for the use of mobile broadband. Last October, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said Americans' consumption of mobile broadband has grown so quickly that we are almost at a bottleneck, and that more wireless spectrum is needed for it immediately. The plan, therefore, says that it will increase the 255 MHz - 3.7 GHz spectrum available to "terrestrial broadband ser [...]
[VideoNuze] The FCC's National Broadband Plan: A First Look
Tue, 16 March 2010 17:17:15 GMT - The FCC released an executive summary of its "National Broadband Plan" yesterday (more details are expected today), which it has been developing for most of the last year at the direction of Congress. Regardless of your political beliefs, when the government decides to weigh in on key telecommunications issues, it's important to understand its positions and their potential implications. This is particularly true given how dynamic the digital, broadband and mobile landscapes are. Based on my reading of the Executive Summary, here are my first reactions to some of the most important parts of the plan:Spectrum reclamation/mobile use - One of the most anticipated pieces of the plan is what the FCC would propose to do with spectrum currently allocated to local br [...]

[VideoNuze] March Madness on Demand iPhone App Will be Big Test for AT&T's 3G Network
Thu, 11 March 2010 18:23:34 GMT - College hoops bragging rights won't be the only thing on the line when the NCAA March Madness men's basketball tournament kicks off next week. Also under the microscope will the performance of AT&T's 3G network, since CBS Mobile announced earlier this week that its new $9.99 premium iPhone app will offer live streaming of all the tournament's games over AT&T's 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi networks. As with last year there will also be a free "lite" app that will offer on-demand clips only. Presumably AT&T, CBS and NCAA have modeled how many concurrent streams could be requested under different penetration rates for the app and feel comfortable with AT&T's ability to support these in a quality manner. Let's hope for their sake they got the math right. I [...]
